How to paint ocean in watercolor

This is a paint with me video, where I show you my process of painting from a reference photo.

Tips:

  • You don’t have to copy 100% from the reference photo
  • Remove any details that you don’t think necessary to be in your painting.
  • Do a light pencil sketch can be helpful.
  • Always go from light to dark
  • To paint ocean foam, you can either use white gouache, or masking fluid, or if you can just reserve white space ( or called negative painting) .
  • If you want to paint loosely, try to think about what factor of the photo you want to communicate with the viewers, what is the most thing that captures your attention. Don’t spend time painting all the details, that is not necessary for a loose painting.
  • Most importantly, enjoy the process, have fun and let watercolor surprises you with the final result.

Happy painting ! 🙂
